Our brief was to appoint a Trading Director to revolutionise the purchasing department of a FTSE100 distribution business.
Whilst being the sector leader, the Managing Director saw an opportunity to bring in an external hire who could propel the business to new heights. The appointment of a new Trading Director would allow the business to make significant improvements to the leadership and direction of the trading function, which in turn would transform the way the business selected, purchased and traded their products. This would also provide the business with expert skills to ensure they could continue to offer the top quality products to their customers.
Fortune Hill invested considerable time to ensure that all stakeholders agreed on the role specification, as well as ensuring that the eventual candidate would be culturally appropriate.
The client felt that, as a traditional business, change was needed to stay ahead of its competitors. With this in mind we were tasked with presenting candidates who had worked in businesses where transformation and change had taken place. In addition, the client wanted to see individuals who had worked in similar sectors, where they could bring alternative beneficial experience.
Our research team diligently explored the agreed list of 150 target companies and thoroughly mapped the market to find appropriate candidates. Fortune Hill's expert knowledge of the commercial and trading market, particularly in distribution companies, we were able to identify key organisations and individuals more efficiently and use that knowledge to enhance our conversations with potential candidates.
The client commented on the exceptional quality of the shortlist we provided, which made the eventual choice between two outstanding candidates very difficult.
In the end, it was felt that the successful candidate would not only bring experience of working in a change environment, but also an additional set of skills that would benefit that need for transformation.
