The Brief

We were tasked with appointing a Merchandise Controller to oversee the hardlines merchandising function for this £multi-billion online retailer.

This appointment was of great strategic importance as this individual would have financial accountability for almost sixty per cent of the entire organisation.

The Merchandise Controller needed to have broad commercial experience and significant upwards potential. One of the challenges of this brief was that our client wanted to appoint an individual from a non-hardlines background so that they would join the business with no preconceptions. The successful candidate would need to objectively evaluate the function and come up with creative and original ideas to drive it to double in size over the coming years.

The Process

We mapped out all major grocers and FMCG businesses in the UK in order to identify the most commercially astute consumer-facing talent in the market.

We conducted thorough assessments of all candidates to ensure they had the right mix of skills and experience, in addition to the right personality to ensure a perfect cultural fit. We created a compelling story around our client's history and the role itself to engage candidates who would otherwise not consider relocation to a different part of the UK, where our client was based.

This individual had risen on a fast trajectory thus far in his career and our client supported his relocation in order to take on this role.
