The Brief

To facilitate the appointment of an individual to lead and drive the international growth of our client's business, across all formats.

The Head of International Business Development would be accountable for assessing international market opportunities and determining the best market entry strategy. They would also be required to develop new and existing partnerships in order to grow international sales and profitability. Strong strategy experience, excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills were prerequisite, along with significant retail operations experience across different formats/trading models, particularly concessions and franchise.

The Process

The ideal candidate was emotionally attached to their company, where they had worked for over 20 years.

Fortune Hill facilitated the placement of an individual who was, at the time, Head of International for a leading UK high-street retailer, responsible for 230 stores in 12 different countries. She had been regularly promoted in recognition of her outstanding performance and was a strong believer in, and consumer of, the brand for which she worked and therefore struggled to see how she could be tempted to move. By understanding what it was that excited her about her current role, Fortune Hill was able to make her understand how relevant this opportunity was to her.

The Result

Since joining, her performance reviews have been excellent and she is delighted to have made the career move.

Following a very positive first meeting with the client, this individual was due to travel for an extended period, making it exceptionally difficult to progress the conversation. Fortune Hill stayed in close contact to maintain her interest level despite the long periods between meetings with the client. Upon resignation, she was offered a more lucrative package by her current employer, in addition to a promotion as a result of a restructuring of the whole department, to accommodate her career ambitions. Having been coached as to what to expect, she resisted the counter-offer and joined our client. Since joining she has delivered above the expectations of our client.
