Our brief was to identify and attract a ‘digital technology expert’ who could step change the performance of our client’s digital business.
Our client had incredibly high expectations and was only interested in hiring an 'A-player.' Therefore the search needed to identify and engage the UK's most impressive and ambitious Technology Leaders who could also demonstrate a track record of deliverying digital innovation. The client also stipulated that suitable candidates would be highly commercial and capable of engaging with senior stakeholders, such as the Group CEO, and able to explain complex technical matters in simple terms. In addition, the client wanted to appoint an individual who could succeed their Group CIO and therefore candidates needed to demonstrate breadth beyond the digital domain and significant upward potential.
The Fortune Hill project team conducted the search on a strictly confidential basis. Our client's identity was only discussed with appropriate candidates following rigorous qualification and assessment of their suitability.
We looked extensively into best-in-class digital businesses to identify the best candidates. This included going beyond obvious retail competitors to include other consumer-focussed businesses in our search.

This individual brought extensive experience leading Digital transformation within both multi-channel and pureplay retailers. Despite a challenging counter-offer by his current employer, Fortune Hill coached the individual through his exit process to make the transition as simple as possible for all parties. As a consequence of the experience provided to both the client and candidate, Fortune Hill have been engaged on a number of additional searches the client and a new client where the individual appointed is a non-executive Director.
